My dying dog’s final weekend

Eight years ago I adopted Mahina, a 5-year old Great Pyrenees. But all those happy years of roaming, exploring and playing have finally taken their toll on Mahina. She has spinal arthritis that has been gradually worsening over the past nine months. Her time on this earth is almost up. Last April we realized that the medicine we’ve been giving her was only buying us a little more time with her. Come Monday, that time will run out. So to honor the amazing life we’ve had because of and with Mahina, this weekend is dedicated to her; no blogging, no tweating, no working, just time with our beloved dog.

Hawaii locavores rejoice!

Hawaii has one of the most abundant agricultural zones in the US, and now people who like to “eat local” have one more reason to rejoice: the Maui Cattle Company now offers consumers Kula pasture-finished lamb, in addition to the beef.

In F as in Fat: 2009, Hawaii fared well at 5th lowest in the nation for adult obesity at 21.8%. But the news is not so good for Hawaii’s children. Hawaii ranks 37th in nation for overweight kids, at 28.5%. Worryingly, the percentage of obese and overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states, according to the report.
